Retirement is a great time to do something completely different. If you’re stuck for ideas, though, why not try one of these fabulous autumn getaways?

Sun seeking
If you’re hankering after some autumnal sun this year, head to Crete. Located in the southeast part of the European continent, the island has a longer summer than most and the warm weather is accompanied by a season of olive, grape and chestnut harvesting.

Oktoberfest
In 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig married Therese of Saxony and such was the celebration, it continued for the next 170 years. It is, of course, Oktoberfest. This year, the world’s biggest folk festival kicks off in Munich on 22 September until 7 October.

Autumn Walking Festival
Whether you’re a relaxed rambler or enjoy tackling the more arduous walks, the Autumn Walking Festival on the Isle of Man caters for everyone. Taking in the spectacularly beautiful woodlands, glens, river banks, hills and coastline, this long-established four-day festival is a great way to experience the island.

Traditional wine making
Portugal's Douro Valley is one of the few places in the world where grapes are still trodden by foot. Join the locals over October harvest festival as they make wine in this stunning Unesco World Heritage site.

Falmouth Oyster Festival
Now in its 22 year, the Falmouth Oyster Festival celebrates the start of the oyster dredging season, the native Fal Oyster and the diversity of Cornish seafood, with four days of feasting, cooking demos, live music, food and craft stalls. The event runs from 11- 14 October.
